If you didn’t know, your sump pump removes excess water from the lowest areas on your property. Responsible for preventing basement flooding and water damage, it’s an important piece to make sure is working properly year-round.

One way to avoid an unexpected repair is to perform regular testing and maintenance on your sump pump. Turn the sump pump on every few months to ensure it’s running properly. If it’s not, it’s much better to find out during a test than during a heavy rainstorm.

How to Test Your Sump Pump:

  • Check the sump pump’s electrical cords – After locating the sump pump in your basement, crawl space, or mechanical room, unplug its two cords from the electrical outlet. Next, plug in only the pump cord and make sure you can hear the pump running. Then, plug both cords back into the outlet.
  • Test the pump mechanism – Remove the lid from your sump pump and slowly pour a decent amount of water into it. The pump switch should immediately turn on and begin removing the water. Ensure that the pump fully removes all of the water and switches itself off. Repeat once more and ensure it removes all of the water before turning itself off.
  • Clean the outdoor pipe – Locate the pipe that catches the water that drains from the sump pump and carries it outside. There should be a pipe that leads outdoors. Observe the opening and ensure that no debris, dirt, or other items are blocking the pipe.
